Are you in the midst of a terrible storm? Is the water rushing into your boat, and you feel like you are going to sink?
If that is you today, take heart my friend, you are not alone. In today’s scripture passage, we see the disciples panic stricken.
‘Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” ‘Matthew 8:23-27
They were fishermen, they had seen storms before, but at this time, they were panic-stricken; however, this one was different.
For some reason, this storm scared the living daylights out of them. Isn’t that us during our trials and storms?
The boat gets a rocking, and sloshing, and suddenly our faith is shaken. We know we are to place our faith and trust in Jesus, yet when our storm hits us, we go blank.
The disciples rushed down below deck. What a sight that must have been, disciples tripping over each other, pushing and shoving to get to Jesus. And what is Jesus doing?
The storm of the century is happening all around, and He is sleeping. In all fairness, He is Jesus so He can do those things ☺.
They beg Him to save them. When He speaks the wind and the waves calm, but first He asks them why their faith is lacking and why they are afraid.
The disciples, like us, cannot calm the storm – we don’t have that power, but we know the One who can, just like the disciples knew.
Cry out to the One who can calm the storm when you in the midst of it.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for calming the storms in my life even when my faith is lacking. I cannot calm these storms that surround me, but I know you can. Please calm the storms and strengthen my faith in the process. Amen!
