LGD 018: Immeasurably More

Have you ever asked for something from God and promised Him the world in return? God, if you only get me through this test, even though I didn’t study for it.

God, if you only get me this job.

God, if you only…

I wish I could say it has only been a few times I have used the phrase, God, if you only, but the truth is I have used it far too many times.

God is not a slot machine or a genie in the bottle. He is the all-powerful God who created the heavens and the earth.

Sometimes we think that God will just do whatever we ask, but we miss a subtly in our verse for today.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,”

Ephesians 3:20

“to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

Ephesians 3:21

In our COVID-19 reality, we beg God to stop the virus and let us come out and play. We beg Him to return our jobs to us. We beg Him for some money to get us through the day.

We beg Him…

Does He not hear my requests? Does He not hear the longing in my heart or the pain in my voice as I cry out to Him.

He does hear you, but we also miss the subtle nuance at the end of verse 20. We tend to the focus on the first part of the verse, the immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.

But, we miss the second part of the verse, “according to His power that is at work within us”.

I know I have missed this subtly many times. I think because I ask, I will get, but that is not always the case. It is especially hard when someone is battling an illness.

We ask for healing, but it doesn’t come. Why? Did I not pray enough? No, you prayed enough; however, God had a different plan in mind.

I have wondered many times why some prayers are answered and others are not. We beg God to heal our land of the virus, but God whispers, don’t you see what I am doing?

I am healing your land, just not the way you thought.

I am drawing people to me. Over half a million people have come to the Lord during our health crisis. The Lord sees the big picture, and He is healing our land.

As you go through your day, share with God your hopes and your fears. Ask Him to heal our land both spiritually and physically, but in accordance with His will and purpose so He may be glorified.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see what you are doing around me. Help me see the greater picture, but I ask that you would heal our land and turn our hearts toward you as we yield a knee to your will. Thank you for doing immeasurably more than all we could ask or imagine. I ask you to give me strength and patience for the day ahead. Amen!
