LGD 021: I Need a Hug

A couple hugging

Despite all the negative press about the Coronavirus, the virus has seemed to draw our communities closer together. If you have ventured out for a walk, you have undoubtedly found that your neighbors are a bit more friendly.

A couple hugging

Isolation hurts us.

Community heals us.

We all need a hug now and then.

As a demonstrative person, I miss giving and receiving hugs. This has probably been one of the tougher things about social distancing.

In today’s scripture, we see a gentle reminder of who we are as followers of Christ, as well as our mandate:

‘Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Colossians 3:12

Even in our brokenness, we are commissioned to act with compassion and kindness.

During this season, our patience might be growing thin which breaks down our ability to kind, compassionate, gentle and humble. I think it is safe to say that we have, at some point, reached our break points.

It is at our weak point, that verse 13 kicks in:

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Colossians 3:13

A reminder that we are not in this alone. We are not isolated from the world, but in the world. We will make mistakes. Say a sharp word here or there, but we will forgive as we have been forgiven by our Heavenly Father.

Today, as you go throughout your day, grant those closest to you an extra amount of grace. Give them a kind word of encouragement or forgive them a few more times than you think they deserve.

You never know what that extra measure of grace and kindness will do for them.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for forgiveness. Thank you for your grace and mercy. Thank you giving me the strength to make it through the day. I ask for an extra amount of grace today. I ask that you would help me to extend grace and kindness to those around me. May I make someone’s day today because of the joy and hope I have in You. Amen!

I am the host of an ABF Lifegroup - a collection of folks doing community and life together. We are a ministry of Agoura Bible Fellowship. When I am not leading this group, I love to travel, take photographs, share stories, and design workspaces that matter.
