LGD 029: Be Kind & Compassionate

Man with a sign that reads seeking human kindness

I don’t watch a lot of news, in fact, I rarely watch it; however, I was struck by the lack of “good news” in the stories.

When the quarantine hit, it was 30 minutes of doom and gloom. Then it morphed into 29 minutes of doom and gloom with one minute of thanking our first responders.

Now, it is a bit more balanced. There is up to ten minutes of goodness on the airwaves. What a relief.

The pictures featured in today’s post is how many people feel. Questions have circulated about kindness and care, and does it still exist in our current reality.

Scripture has the answer,

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:32

We have been challenged by our current reality, but there is so much to be thankful for during this time.

During the middle of the week, I take a 45 minutes for myself and join a few other folks on Zoom at 7:30am and ride no where quickly. During this time, we can request songs.

One of the ways that I can bring Jesus to spin class is to slowly introduce my fellow spinners to songs that have a different outlook. They aren’t all Christian songs, but they all are positive. In fact, my instructor comments frequently that I find the positive songs and that it encourages her.

We, as believers, make our fair share of mistakes. We are not always kind and compassionate or forgiving.

The writer challenges us to be different, to live a life that exudes kindness and compassion. If we can change one person’s day, isn’t it worth it?

Today, as you go about your day, let the words of Ephesians 4:32 sink into your soul. If someone rubs you the wrong way, give them extra amount grace today. Forgive them and give them your kindness, and in return (hopefully) they will give it to you as well.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for today. Thank you for using us to be salt and light in our world. Give us an extra amount of grace and compassion for those whom we interact with. Thank you for using me to make a difference in someone’s life today. Amen!
