LGD 036: Give Me Your Hearts

As the events of the past week and a half are etched in our hearts and minds, we start fresh this week with a renewed focus on revival.

In the Old Testament scriptures, we see God working through His prophets to call His people back to Him.

‘That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”

Joel 2:12

Revival always exists, but it often takes dramatic or traumatic events for people to see their need. In Joel, we see the Lord calls His people back to Him because it is the right time. He begs people to surrender their hearts to Him.

“Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”

Joel 2:13

Some people would argue that God is not compassionate or kind, but here we see His passionate pursuit of His people. He is pursuing us. He wants to have a relationship with us. He sees the inner working of our hearts.

In 1 Samuel, when Samuel was looking to anoint the next king of Israel, Samuel looked at the exterior, but the Lord reminded him that God looked at the heart. He looks at our hearts as well – broken, yet beautiful.

“Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this curse. Perhaps you will be able to offer grain and wine to the Lord your God as before.”

Joel 2:14

“Blow the ram’s horn in Jerusalem! Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting.”

Joel 2:15

God gives us many chances to turn from our ways. He begs us to return to Him.

As we have seen throughout the pandemic, hundreds of thousands are coming to Christ and it is not over. The events of the past several weeks break the heart of God.

Our hearts can be united on the one promise we rest on each day – Jesus came to seek and save the lost.

Today, take time to pray for those around you. Provide love and compassion to those you meet, and join in what God is doing around us to bring many people to Him.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the reminder in Joel to throw away our junk and return to you. Help us to extend love and compassion to those whom we encounter daily and to pray for revival across the globe, nation and our street. Thank you for what you did on the cross. Amen!

I am the host of an ABF Lifegroup - a collection of folks doing community and life together. We are a ministry of Agoura Bible Fellowship. When I am not leading this group, I love to travel, take photographs, share stories, and design workspaces that matter.
