LGD 037: Missing the Big Picture

Girls eyes are covered by hands

Over the past several years, I have experienced half-marathons all across the United States, and many times you can see the finish line as you begin the race.

Life is quite different from a race. You normally get to see a little bit in front of you. Sometimes the trail has rocks, and you wonder where your next step will take you. Other days it is like you are floating on the clouds and winding through an endless forest.

In a world that seems dark right now, God shows us in today’s scripture how beautiful His timing is, and the breadth of His vision.

“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

Ecclesiastes 3:11

When I have an especially difficult day, as I recently had, this verse wraps me in a blanket and shows me how small my vision is.

God has made everything beautiful – you, me, the earth, his creatures and so much more. The one thing we know for certain is that our here and now is only temporary; however, we will live on in eternity.

There are two sides to the eternity equation – the good side (heaven) or the one down south (way down south, a.k.a. hell). We just read it – God planted in eternity in our hearts. We have a choice.

It’s a beautiful thing when we recognize that we have a choice. We see snapshots in time as we progress throughout life, but God sees it all. He sees our beginning, our end, and along the dashed lines.

As I turned forty, I reflected on the forty moments that meant the most to me. I called it 40 for 40. I saw the road that shaped me. The moments that made my journey were life-affirming, and life-altering; however, there were many moments in between that were filled with regret and pain over the choices I made.

If I had to do it all over again, I would probably change some things, but the moments that propelled me forward on life’s journey – those are the one’s where I saw God work powerfully in my life.

What would your 40 for 40 moments be?

What beautiful moments do you remember on your journey of life?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for showing me glimpses of my life’s journey when I need it the most. Thank you for putting eternity in my heart, and for giving me the opportunity to choose forever with you. Today, please show me a small glimpse of my forever. Amen!
