In the spring of 2011, I traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, with Jim Liljegren. It was our first stop on our four-country, seven-city tour to prepare for the summer trips.
After traveling for 17 hours, you either pass out from exhaustion or check your email. Jim loved checking in with his supporters, and I grabbed my camera.
Today’s scripture reminds us that we are to be like our Heavenly Father in every way. Paul shares in Ephesians 5,
“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.”Ephesians 5:1
Jim loves the Lord, and if there is someone who imitates the Father’s heart, it is him. Christ called us to “go and make disciples”, and for nearly 50 years Jim has been faithful to his calling – first as a pastor, and second as a missionary.
The scriptures say we are to imitate God in everything. Everything…did God really mean everything?
God loves the poor – we should love the poor.
He reached out to the hurting and needy – we should do likewise.
Jesus called the little children to him – we should invest in the children who are our future.
Imitation, they say, is the best form of flattery. We should imitate Christ with our words and our actions. It’s not an either/or situation.
You might be thinking, I really come up short. Yep, that’s going to happen. It happens to me daily.
However, I don’t stop striving towards imitating Christ, and you should not either.
Today, when you are faced with a decision, think of Ephesians 5:1 and imitate Christ’s action because we are His children.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the reminder to be imitators of You. Guide me today in words and actions to follow in your footsteps. Forgive me when I misstep, and pick me up when I bite the dust. Thank you for your grace and love. Amen!
