We often associate gift-giving or generosity with the end of the year or at certain celebrations throughout the year.
In today’s scripture, the concept or act of giving is placed alongside other spiritual traits.
“Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us —I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.”2 Corinthians 8:7
When we think about the main tenants of scripture we think of faith, Jesus, the power of scripture, the Ten Commandments, but we often forget about generosity.
Generosity is part of who we are as human beings, but its action is a verb. When you give a gift – it is an action.
When you make a donation or give of your time, it is an action.
Andy Stanley’s church, NorthPoint Community Church, started a campaign titled Be Rich in 2007 to serve their local and global communities.
Each year they ask their trusted partners what is on their dream list.
Imagine a struggling business or non-profit and someone asked you what would help you for the next year.
The list has included operational expenses, vehicles, staff positions, food, housing, clothes, and the list continues.
Over the past 13 years, over $50,000,000 has been given away to help make a difference in people’s lives. They are living out today’s scripture – they are excellent at giving.
Andy Stanley shared,
“Imagine a world where people skeptical of what we believe are envious of how well we treat each other and amazed at how well we treat them.“Andy Stanley
As the scripture says, God calls us to be excellent in our faith, our speech, our knowledge, and our love for each other. Then he drops the bomb on us.
He wants us to be generous in our giving. Giving takes on many forms. It can be monetary, time, bringing food, sitting with someone – the sky is the limit.
I want to be known for my faith, my speech, my knowledge, and my love – and my generosity.
During this pandemic time, how have you been generous to those around you who need it?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the call to action to be generous. Help me to live out generosity in my words and actions. I ask you to show me how I can be generous today. Nudge me when it is time, and expand my heart so I am overflowing with generosity towards others. Thank you for your love and example. Amen!
