LGD 057: Remember & Follow

B&W: Father and Son walking down a road together

When you were growing up, do you remember your heroes? I loved Cal Ripkin, Jr. – I wanted to be him. One small minor detail, I was not that good at baseball.

No matter how old I got, he was always my baseball hero. I saw him at one of his last games when he was in Southern California – it was fantastic. He was the same in person as in front of the camera.

As a young believer, I had several men who took me under their wing and developed me into the person I am today.

Some of our heroes are family members – grandparents, parents – or maybe they are close friends or discipleship leaders.

Today, we are called to remember those who set the example for us.

“Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.”

Hebrews 13:7

My grandfather was a pastor. I remember the stories of him memorizing scripture as part of his seminary training while operating an elevator. He literally wrote the words of faith on an elevator wall.

Whether you are a pastor, missionary, friend, fellow traveler, family member, we all set an example for those that come behind us. Our legacy lives on in the hearts and actions of those who travel the road of life with us.

Our goal should be to live a life worthy of the calling of Christ. Just as our leaders and mentors set the example for us, we have a duty to pass it on to the next generation.

How do you want to be remembered?

For me, I want to be a part of life change in the next generation. Life change looks different for each person, but thirty years from now, I want to be able to look back and see the ripple effects of a life well-lived for the Kingdom.

How do you want to be remembered?

Take time today to remember and celebrate the examples of faith in your life.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for these examples of faith that have gone before me to mold me and shape me into the person I am today. I ask you to bless the men and women who have changed my life. Help me to pass what I know to the next generation. Thank you for these shining examples of faith. Amen!

I am the host of an ABF Lifegroup - a collection of folks doing community and life together. We are a ministry of Agoura Bible Fellowship. When I am not leading this group, I love to travel, take photographs, share stories, and design workspaces that matter.
