Over the years, I have been able to work on different projects around the globe that serve people in need.

I worked with Habitat for Humanity in Trinidad helping to create a foundation for a house.

In Russia, I helped paint stairwells of apartment buildings.

Most recently, I help build homes in Mexico

We are called to work with excellence. In today’s scripture, Paul guides us towards excellent work.

“…and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you”

1 Thessalonians 4:11

During Paul’s time, they worked exclusively with their hands as tentmakers. There were no offices during his time. Some people like Daniel or Joseph in the Old Testament served in positions supporting the leadership of the country or region.

In the cases of Daniel and Joseph, they served faithfully in the background until it required them to live in the full light. Each time, God used their faithfulness for His glory and save many people.

Paul guides the people of his time to work with excellence,

“so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.”

1 Thessalonians 4:12

When we work with excellence, our work becomes an extension of our testimony. Whether we serve in an office, in the entertainment industry, on the schoolyard, or build something with our hands, we leave a lasting legacy for the unbeliever.

Our work has the opportunity to create conversations with unbelievers that open the door for sharing our faith and hope.

However, the reverse is also true. When we fail to do our work with excellence, we run the risk of hurting our testimony.

I remember a story my dad shared with me from his days of work. When there was a problem with a customer, the customer listened to all the sides. They then asked my dad if the particular work being referenced needed to happen.

When my dad answered affirmatively, they said okay and approved the work. His reputation, character, and his excellent work created trust with his customer.

Today, perform your work with excellence whether you are serving your family or others.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the gift of work that you have established in all of us. Give us the drive to do our work with excellence, and to live a life worthy of our calling. Thank you for your provisions today. Amen!

I am the host of an ABF Lifegroup - a collection of folks doing community and life together. We are a ministry of Agoura Bible Fellowship. When I am not leading this group, I love to travel, take photographs, share stories, and design workspaces that matter.
