Today is Labor Day and a much-needed rest from the grind of a normal workweek.

As we shared last week,

In our passage today, we see God working out a purpose in us.

“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

Philippians 2:13

No one can deny the challenging year we have experienced. Many jobs were put on hold, furloughed, or even lost as the result of the government shutdown.

My heart breaks for each person in those situations.

We must not forget that God is at work in us and through us despite our current circumstances.

While some industries suffered the loss of workers, other industries (like janitorial) hired many workers during the pandemic.

Work is a calling.

I may not like my job every day, but God has placed me in my current position for such a time as this. It is hard and stressful.

However, God is refining you and me through our current situations. He has a greater plan at play. We see our current circumstances, but God sees the master plan.

My hearts desire may be to do “x”, but there might not be a position ready for me.

As hard as it is, we have to wait on his perfect timing no matter how difficult it might be.

The position or new role may still be in the works, but if we rush God (and the plan) we risk losing out on the role we were created for.

Today, as you enjoy a much-needed respite from the toils of work, remember that God is at work in you and around you to fulfill the purpose for which He has called you.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the beauty of a day off to rest, relax, and recharge. Help me to rest in your perfect plan. Please bring jobs for the jobless, and hope to the hopeless in this challenging time. Amen!
