LGD 103: Go and Make Disciples

You have heard the stories from friends or family returning from a short-term mission trip, and you think I would love to go the next time.

Short-term trips are fun and tough. Some trips pull you all the way around the world, while others take you around the state.

During our 2011 trip to Pskov, Russia my buddy Paul and I stayed with a Russian host family. There was a small challenge we had to overcome – we didn’t speak Russian and they didn’t speak English.

Enter Google Translate or the Russian equivalent.

Each night we would have dinner and sit around the computer to communicate. Most short term trips are not this extreme, but I could tell you stories of taxi rides in Russia or being left alone in Kenya for a church service or singing in the rain in Warsaw, Poland.

Jesus told us,

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 28:19

Whether we walk across the street or board an airplane for parts unknown, we are following God’s call to make disciples.

Each of us play a pivotal role in someone’s faith journey whether or not we know it. Our role may be to point someone to church or invite them to watch a church service online.

We may be a listening ear for someone in pain or we might lead them to Christ. Regardless of our role in the journey, Jesus called us to go and make disciples.

Not everyone is called to cross borders, and that is fine. Others are called to be the financiers of the trip or provide a house for a family in need. This is why the body of believers is amazing – we all have a role to play.

Today, I want to invite you to join our virtual missions trip to Mexico beginning next week. As the pandemic made it evident we would not be participating in a mission trip this year, we faithfully sent money to our partner organization YUGO Ministries.

Next week, we see the final touches of a house we helped build for one of YUGO Ministries staff – Ray.

If you have considered joining a short-term mission trip, this virtual experience will let you peek behind the curtain and see what happens in a few short days in Mexico. Join us for an incredible experience.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for placing a call on our lives to go and make disciples. Help me to live this message each day in my neighborhood, workplace, or school. Thank you for your blessings and grace. Amen!
