LGD 148: Leaving An Inheritance

Most of us have traditions that get passed from one generation to another before they eventually end.

I tend to joke with my brother that I am going to will him my student loan debt. Good news for him, I already paid that off.

Just like traditions, some kids want their inheritance early while others are content to receive it later.

The parable of “The Prodigal Son” (Luke 15:11-22) describes a son asking his father for his inheritance early only to waste it away. He then comes running home to his father who graciously and lovingly welcomes him back with open arms.

The book of Proverbs, known for its wisdom, highlights the value of leaving something behind for the next generations.

It says,

“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.”

Proverbs 13:22

Inheritance does not always mean money. Families have rich traditions or collectibles that are passed from one generation to another.

Proverbs guides us to make wise decisions, not only for ourselves but for the future of our family.

What about if I never get married or don’t have any kids?

Sometimes friends have stronger bonds than families. You can choose to share your traditions or inheritance with them.

When I think about what has been passed down in my family, I think of the following:

  • Long marriages – grandparents and parents (50+ years)
  • Generosity – parents
  • Christ-centered relationships – grandparents and parents
  • Curiosity – grandparents and parents
  • Board games – grandparents and parents

Generosity is the only financial item on this list, and it involves giving things away.

Sometimes we are blessed with wealth, and other times we are blessed with intangible gifts like long marriages.

Regardless, the principle remains the same, take time to pass down the most important things to the next generation.

It’s your inheritance – you get to choose who and what they receive – make it memorable.

Prayer: Lord, help us make wise choices regarding our inheritance. Please help us make the right choices in what we leave behind for future generations. Amen!
